Did you know that donkeys have extremely efficient digestive systems?
Donkeys are much better at digesting food than horses and ponies, absorbing 95% of what they eat. In the desert, where donkeys evolved, food is scarce, so their digestive systems can break down inedible vegetation and extract moisture from food very efficiently.
The majority of a donkey’s diet should consist of Barley Straw, supplemented with controlled grazing in the summer and hay in the winter. They also require salt and mineral supplements and access to clean, fresh water.
