Hayling Island Donkey Sanctuary Hampshire. A sanctuary for ex-working donkeys and those in need of help. Younger donkeys give donkey rides to children in Staunton Country Park, Havant, daily during the school holidays and weekends throughout the year (weather permitting).
Folly’s Farm Berkamsted, Hertfordshire. Folly’s Farm Home of Rest for Donkeys and Ponies is a non-profit organisation, run entirely on voluntary help and contributions. Most of the donkeys have been rescued from mistreatment and abuse but at Folly’s Farm, they receive love, care and a comfortable home for the rest of their lives. Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary Oxfordshire
Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary is a registered charity which cares for abused and ill-treated donkeys and other animals. Located in the picturesque village of Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, near Wallingford, Oxfordshire. Visitors welcome 11am – 4pm daily.
RSPCA Lockwood Centre for Donkeys and Horses Godalming, Surrey. An equine centre which rehabilitates and rehomes horses, ponies and donkeys. Open to visitors between April and October, when you can meet the donkeys on Wednesdays and Sundays between 11.30am and 4pm. There is a small shop selling ice creams, gifts and drinks and there are footpaths to wander around the donkey fields. Enjoy a picnic in the garden area and watch Donkey Treat Time at 12.30pm or Donkey Grooming at 2.30pm.
The Brewers Arms Heathfield, East Sussex. This cosy country pub is run by friendly staff and serves great food – and there are donkeys living in the field next door, who are always glad to greet visitors.
Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare Ringmer, East Sussex
Raystede provides sanctuary to more than 2000 animals each year and a lifelong home for goats, horses, ponies and donkeys. It is also a safe haven for waterfowl, ducks and geese. Free admission almost every day of the year.

Sussex Horse Rescue Trust Uckfield, East Sussex
Dedicated to the rescuing, rehabilitation and re-homing of horses, ponies and donkeys in Sussex, with over 300 equines at both the sanctuary and in loan homes. Open on Sundays during the summer (check website for current visiting days and times). Visitors can meet the animals, groom a donkey or pony and learn about equine welfare. There is a tea room, shop and field walks to enjoy.

Mudchute Park & Farm Isle of Dogs, East London
Set in 32 acres of countryside, this is one of the largest inner city farms in Europe. A community charity with a working farm, stables, a children’s nursery and a wide range of educational activities. The donkeys work regularly with local school children as part of educational programmes. Open every day, free of charge.
Spitalfields City Farm Spitalfields, East London
As well as donkeys, this East End farm boasts ducks, geese, parrots, chickens, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, ferrets, bees and bugs! Opportunities for volunteers to work with the animals and help out in the gardens. Schools welcome for bespoke guided workshops, courses and tours. Available for parties. Open 6 days a week, Tuesday to Sunday, free of charge.
Surrey Docks Farm South East London
A working charitable farm, with two donkeys and a Shetland pony, among many other animals. The farm provides a huge range of programmes for children, adults and vulnerable groups. For those with green fingers, there are community plots, permaculture and herb gardens and regular green workshops. Work experience and volunteering opportunities, hire space, a mobile farm, working forge, farm shop and other delights. Open 7 days a week, 10am-4pm.

The Donkey Sanctuary Sidmouth, Devon
Set along the historic Jurassic Coast and nestled in the tranquil East Devon countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Donkey Sanctuary’s working farm is home to 500 donkeys, mules and hinnies. Open 365 days a year. Free admission and parking. Dogs on leads welcome. Bike-friendly trails.
Clovelly Donkeys Torridge, Devon. The beautiful heritage village of Clovelly in north Devon is famous for its steep cobbled street, its fishing harbour and its long association with donkeys. In the summer, the donkeys give children’s rides around their meadow and can be seen on the street. In the winter, the local children ride and drive them in the woods.
Weymouth Donkeys Dorset. These famous, award-winning donkeys have been giving donkey rides to children on Weymouth beach since the late 1800s. They can be found at the Pavilion end of the beach next to The Boat Café. Riders must be 16 years and under, with a weight limit of 7 stone or 45kg. Beach rides run every day (weather permitting) from March to October and also at Christmas and February holidays and most winter weekends throughout the year.

Nailsworth Donkey Sanctuary Gloucestershire. Tim and Dawn rescued their first donkey Gussy over 30 years ago and they moved to Nailsworth in 2015. Lots of visitors and families stop by to see the donkeys. School children are welcome and the sanctuary also works in partnership with special education schools and children that are ill. Call ahead to arrange a proper visit.

The sanctuary is open to visitors every Saturday and Sunday from Easter until the first week in January. There is a conducted tour on each of these days. No need to make an appointment, just come along for 2pm prompt and join in the fun! Most of the site is accessible to wheelchair users. We have small gift shop and there is a cafe at nearby Milestone Garden Centre.
“This place is a must for animal lovers, it’s amazing I cannot fault it. The volunteers that led us round were so informative and answered any questions, you can tell they love these donkeys so much. Plenty of time to walk around freely on the tour, it took us just over 2 hours and we enjoyed every minute of it, especially being allowed to pet any of the animals.
